You bought a directional antenna for 40 meters… and the results are disappointing?
It happens far more often than you think..
Many radio amateurs invest thousands of euros in a directional antenna for the 40-meter band, convinced that “more elements” automatically means more DX. Then reality sets in: average signals, difficult DX, and the uncomfortable feeling of having spent a lot of money without a real improvement.
In most cases, the problem is not the antenna.
It’s the installation height.
The truth about 40 meters: the installation height matters more than directivity
On 7 MHz, physics is unforgiving.
What really determines performance is not the number of elements, but the the installation height in fractions of a wavelength (λ):
Low-mounted yagi (<0.3 λ, below 12 m)
They radiate upward, work well for local contacts (NVIS), but are disappointing for DX. The “paper gain” is lost to ground effects.
High-mounted yagi (≥0.4–0.5 λ, 16 m or more)
They produce low radiation angles — exactly what is needed for long-distance DX.
High dipole vs low Yagi: the surprising comparison
A well-installed high wire dipole:
costs far less,
is simple to install,
often outperforms a low Yagi for DX.
A two-element Yagi installed too low:
suffers from distorted radiation lobes,
delivers reduced effective gain,
and leaves many operators frustrated by a poor return on investment.
Our advice
Before spending serious money on a directional antenna, ask yourself one key question:
Can I install it high enough to really make it perform?
If the answer is no, a properly elevated dipole will often give you better results, less frustration, and real on-air satisfaction.
Before spending thousands of euros on a directive, talk to someone who truly knows 40 meters.
We’ll help you choose the right antenna based on your actual space and height, avoiding unnecessary investments and disappointment.
